[unpaid/sample] Fragrance discovery sets are very popular because – I’ll be blunt – we’re not the loyal customers we used to be. It’s very irksome for brands that we don’t stay with the same fragrance for a lifetime in the way that we once did and neither do we visit stores for samples in the way we once did. All in all, it’s harder, with the proliferation of new fragrance brands, for any one fragrance brand to stand out – or even be considered. Discovery sets are a way of immersing yourself in a brand so you can get a feel for them. In the past, I’ve suggested them in the same vein as books in book club – gather your friends around, test all of them, have a glass or six of wine and compare your views. If you like the sound of a fragrance group, the Escentric Molecules Molecule + Discovery Set is a very good place to start.

I remember when this brand launched in the UK – hysteria doesn’t cover it. The concept of the pheromone-like Iso E Super chemical binding to a fragrance molecule to lift it sent everyone into a fragrance frenzy as did the Iso E Super on its own (Escentric Molecules 1) which makes you smell insanely delicious (a woody, sensual skin-like aroma) but only to others. Most users can’t really smell it on themselves which is why the brand added some amplification-worthy notes to make a truly exciting fragrance.

It’s impossible to know whether Iso E Super is something minor with great marketing but I can tell you that Molecule 01 + Mandarin is one of the most exhilarating scents I’ve ever encountered. It’s like being slapped on the cheeks with fresh mandarin slices – a head-spinning, brain electrifying and sense rattling hum dinger of a perfume!

This is the newest Escentric Molecules discovery set comprising eight 8.5ml discovery size fragrances. Molecule 01 + Patchouli, Iris, Guaiac Wood, Mandarin, Ginger or Black Tea so if any of those single notes are ones that you like to find in your perfumes, you’re going to love them at the amplified level you will find them here. In general, I’m unexcited about black tea but in this iteration, it’s something else entirely – deep, medicinal, masculine and woodish – but always returning to the note you were searching for. It’s the same for all of them. I’ve tried most of the fragrances before but never Ginger – it smells exactly like my home made ginger tea which always just a tad too spicy but oh so good for you! That’s how I feel about Molecule 01 + Ginger.

I’d suggest that this is a discovery set very well worth discovering because it feels so very different to other sets because of the single note intensity and the Iso E Super amplification which takes all of the notes to the next level. Maybe something for January when your senses need a shake up and something big to boost your mood. It’s £55 HERE .
