I haven’t been into a Lush store for years – I have had no desire whatsoever to do so. I don’t know whether it’s just the smell that others find so delicious but I don’t or the hecticness of the hundreds of products or and this is the big OR but my brain just shuts entering a store off as a possibility so I never do. However, I was at a press day a few weeks ago and discovered that this particular agency looks after Lush, much to my surprise because the last time I had any contact with them for work, it was all in-house. The agency kindly sent me a box of products that I’d seen that day and included in the package was Lush Cherry Pop Shower Gel, a limited edition (sold out) from Valentine’s day. Bring it back straight away please, Lush.
Now, were you even a child of the seventies if you were not smoking sweetie fags, wearing candy bracelets and chewing down on strawberry laces? Cherry Pop gave me a rush of nostalgia for all of those things but most of all, the word ‘pop’. If you’re not from the UK, pop is a term for a fizzy drink mostly northern, not so common in the south, and I can remember my (Yorkshire) grandparents asking us if we’d like some pop when we went to visit. Hell, yes – we wanted all the pop we could get! I put a post about Cherry Pop up on Instagram a couple of days ago and my comments were filled with stories of the ‘pop man’ who delivered pop from his van in a not dissimilar fashion to an ice-cream van. Pop was the biggest of treats – Barrs Cherry Lemonade was the most common one, I seem to remember, but basically anything filled with chemicals and sugar that was fizzy was, and still is, pop.
Lush Cherry Pop is so close – it even smells fizzy. It smells of childhood treats and hot days with your grandma – it even smells of the thrill shivers of being allowed pop. There are some lemony notes, chemical cherry of course, sweetness and just JOY! Honestly, buy some just for the smell, if and when it’s re-released. I’m not sure I could bathe in it as such but I am loving taking the cap of for secret sniffs every hour or so.
For anyone with The Body Shop nostalgia, something has happened – Lush is selling original Body Shop products such as Aduki Bean Exfoliator, Coconut Body Butter and Peppermint Foot Cream. The founder of Lush (Mark) originally started off with Anita at The Body Shop, formulating and so on. They parted company and Mark lost the rights to his formulas (as I understand things). With The Body Shop going into administration (although it’s making its comeback right now), I’m going to assume that somehow those rights came back to Mark. They even, on their website, title the OG collection ‘The Lush Version: A fresh take on The Body Shop’s Greatest Hits’ so its not hidden news – in fact, they’re very forthcoming on the how’s and the why’s. I’m linking you to the Lush Versions HERE in case you want a trip down memory lane but mostly I’d love to know your seventies sweet shop memories.
I don’t know the Lush retailer employees can stand the over empowering scent all day. I always think that their lungs must be filled with pink glitter fumes
The "illustrations" are just so delightful!! Love your photography. Loved hearing about the pop man. We didn't have that in the US that I can think of. The ice cream truck was enough of a thrill I guess! OH, I took your tip about watching Sirens. It's so good, and funny. The anti-conformist sister makes a crack about "not drinking the Kool Aid." We're still thinking of, what was it, Jonestown all these years later. I guess Kool Aid is being re-cancelled!
