I love Medik8! I was attracted to the brand some years ago, I think it was Nadine Baggott who first alerted me to them and because their retinol was very high level, something you couldn't seem to get from other brands. I also liked it because it is a small company based near me in North London. Shame if they are bought by L'Oreal but I suppose twas ever thus with small niche brands that want to grow.

I actually reviewed one of their products a few months ago for The Independent which they asked me to do. Prior to that, it really had fallen off my radar and still remains off really although the product was nice enough.

I know lots of people who use Medik8. Their Crystal Retinal range is probably the best OTC retinal on the market according to Sali Hughes and Alice Hart Davies who also sells it. And they make the best Combined moisturiser/SPF ever (Advanced Day Ultimate Protect) that I wouldn’t be without and have bought for years. Not cheap but excellent products.

I 100% agree - i don't think there is a Medik8 products that i dislike. For the price range - they are like skinceuticals (to me!)

Medik8 is fab! Love their vitamin C and retinols I’ve tried others but always come back to it. Nadine Baggot, Sali Hughes and Caroline Hirons all fans of the brand

Really interesting to hear the further detail on the Wayne Goss issue. I too watched the video and assumed he’d walked away from the equity as well!

Medik8 are absolutely my favourite skincare brand so I was really surprised to read your comment. How funny! I just can’t find better for the price. Do hope a potential sale doesn’t mean a negative change in their formulas. Always love your beauty news and I know it’s lots of work for you to put together - much appreciated x

Thanks Emily! Nobody ever mentions Medik8 so I just never seem to hear about it - gradually being proved completely wrong 😂

I was too a Medik8 faithful, especially for the Ultimate Recovery cream, which I find now too pricy for being basically an upmarket Aaveno cream. I have also tried their Retinal eye cream, but it doesn’t seem to do anything for me.

What I can rave about though, and thank you Jane for reviewing it, is the French brand PERS. Just fantastic!

I really like these updates so thank you for sharing them with us. I feel like an ‘insider’. Medik8: I used to use and did like but the price is prohibitive especially when I clocked that they were putting less product into their packaging and more container. You told us the word for that recently but it’s disappeared from my brain? Slip?Slack? Anyway I’ve found better retinal products for my skin now that are more competitively priced. This also got me to thinking about how the more expensive a product is the less I use so ergo potentially the less effective and the longer I take to use a product = less regular purchasing. Thats my economics lesson for the day. I think Brands need to think about that. Volume vs Cost

I’ve been using A313 and like it very much despite it sounding like a road near Stonehenge. It’s such good value and I like the consistency. I sometimes use Renew+Me’s Serum in

a Cream too but it comes in a massively slack filled container and only lasts 4 weeks. So not great value for money at all but it’s effective.

I don’t even need to use it with any other products as I find it super moisturising too. Rub it between your hands to emulsify it a bit. A little goes a long way.

I watched that Wayne Goss vid where he distances himself from the brand/products going forward and felt immensely sorry for him, until I saw the statement on the brand website. If it's is true that he will continue to profit from sales and is a majority shareholder - then his YT vid is disingenuous at best.

How funny! Medik8 are the brand me and all my friends use (early 40s). Every product is excellent, never had anything mediocre from there, but the Vitamin C serums are in a league of their own.

I am really curious with what happened to the Wayne Goss situation. The brand seems to have multiple hiccups in the past and things have never been smooth. On the Ren comment - i work for a big corporate so i can sort of guess the logic behind - Ren will not bring in as much cash to be a cash cow, nor have the bright and shinny prospect for a future bloom - so, if you can't bring money to the table, you are out. Also, decisions are very management dependent, i supposed with every acquisition, the soul and passion from the brand owner is difficult to carry across unless you are darlings your way like Tilbury.

Expand full comment

I think Wayne is pretty straight forward so he will probably elaborate in his own time. And yes, I understand about REN but it just seems some bizarre kind of maths where you can allow one brand to fade completely when it probably is viable with the right attention in order to spend an inordinate amount of money developing fragrance when the marketing is probably at a tipping point as we speak. Sorry - that's a very long sentence :-)))

WOW this is a lot to sink in. Then there is Rhode that happened but you can elaborate on that later.

I agree on not using your name as a brand. I think long ago in fashion land back in the 80's, there was a fashion designer, I can't remember her name but it had to do with the rights to her name and her fashion line. It took something like 10 years. Then, there was that thing with Fleetwood Mac way back but that was music. I assume Wayne has a gag order and some Non-compete clause. I don't know how it will all go with Wayne but I have flashbacks of what happened with Vidal Sassoon.

ELC well they were the cosmetic royalty of America. I don't think they ever thought to lose the throne. I just think they don't know how the real people of today shop and look at beauty products. People aren't shopping at some department stores for prestige. It is more of buying the instant hype and feeding one's ego, again instantly.

Kim Kardashian. I think the consumers had the power of that. Why give her more money? Besides all the click-bait posting and just all the BS is enough to just ignore the Kardashians completely!
